Abi Hurairah narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “When anyone of you wakes up from sleep and makes wudhu’ (ablution), he should douche his nose three times, for Shaytaan (Satan) spends the night inside it.”
Narrated in Sahih Bukhari, hadith no. 3295
Grade: Sahih (authentic)
Reflections:
1. Islam teaches us etiquette in our day-to-day routines.
2. A Muslims should regularly make wudhu’ upon waking up from sleep.
3. When making wudhu’, nasal douching (rinsing out the nostrils by inserting water into them and blowing them out) is encouraged.
4. Amongst the rationales for cleaning the nose with water after waking up is to chase out Shaytaan, who resides within.
Let’s make it a habit to perform wudhu’ and clean out our noses after getting up from a night’s sleep.
