Building And Maintaining The Mosque

‘Uthman bin ‘Affan narrated:
Verily, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Whoever builds a mosque for the sake of Allah, Allah will build for him (an abode) like it in Paradise.”

Narrated in Sahih Bukhari, hadith no. 450
Grade: Sahih (authentic)

Reflections:
1. Great reward awaits those who build mosques out of sincere intentions and not to seek worldly gains such as wealth, positions of power or praises from others.

2. Ibnul Jauzi cited, “Whoever puts his name on the mosque he has built, he is removed from sincerity.”

3. He who builds a mosque for the sake of seeking Allah’s pleasure will in turn have a residence built for him in Paradise.

4. Mosques must not only be built, but also maintained:

“The mosques of Allah are only to be maintained by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day and establish prayer and give zakah (obligatory charity) and do not fear except Allah, for it is expected that those will be of the (rightly) guided.”

Quran 9:18
Translation taken from Sahih International

According to Ibnul Jauzi, there are two opinions as to the meaning of maintaining mosques in the verse above:

a. Regularly visiting them to engage in acts of worship, partake in religious talks and the like

b. Partaking in their upkeep

5. Muhammad Ahmad ar-Rashid in ‘al-Raqaiq’ wrote, “Whoever wishes to remain steadfast on the path of Allah, it must be through the door to steadfastness: the mosque.”
