Narrated `Abdullah:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Abusing a Muslim is Fusuq (i.e., an evil-doing), and killing him is Kufr (disbelief).”
Narrated in Sahih Bukhari, hadith no. 6044
Grade: sahih (authentic)
Translation adapted from sunnah.com
Reflections:
1. Insulting a fellow Muslim is considered the act of a fasiq (a person who engages in fusuq).
2. Declaring war against other Muslims is considered an act of kufr.
3. A Mu’min will not ridicule, label, and call others with bad names. Allah forbids the Mu’minin (those with iman or belief) from insulting and ridiculing each other:
“O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.” (Al Hujuraat :11, Sahih International)
4. Imam at-Thabari said of the above Quranic verse in Jami’ul Bayan, “This prohibition includes any and all forms of insults and ridicule. It is not acceptable for a Mu’min to insult another Mu’min for his poverty, past sins, or for other reasons.”
5. The habit of insulting others comes from arrogance and pride of oneself, that one is better than others.
Let’s avoid the evil habit and sin of abusing and insulting others.
