Doors of Goodness

عَنْ مُعَاذٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ سَأُنَبِّئُكَ بِأَبْوَابٍ مِنْ الْخَيْرِ الصَّوْمُ جُنَّةٌ وَالصَّدَقَةُ تُطْفِئُ الْخَطِيئَةَ كَمَا يُطْفِئُ الْمَاءُ النَّارَ وَقِيَامُ الْعَبْدِ مِنْ اللَّيْلِ 

From Muaz bin Jabal RA that the Prophet SAW said; ... "I will tell you the doors of goodness which are; fasting is a shield, charity dissolves sins like water extinguishes fire, and a servant wakes up (qiamullail) at night...

Learnings:

1. The Prophet SAW delivered a message about the doors of goodness to his people, namely fasting, almsgiving and qiamullail. 

2. The first door to goodness is fasting.  Fasting becomes a fortress or a shield for someone from doing things forbidden by Allah. Fasting is a shield that will protect against the destruction of the soul, damage to the journey of life, protect oneself from falling into the group of people who do not have patience. 

3. Fasting is also a shield that gives firmness of heart in piety to Allah. Fasting is one's shield from hell fire. The words of the Prophet SAW: 

إِنَّمَا الصِّيَامُ جُنَّةٌ يَسْتَجِنُّ بِهَا الْعَبْدُ مِنَ النَّارِ 

Fasting is a shield that can protect a servant from the torment of hell"

(HR Ahmad No: 3868 in sahih al-Jami'). 

4. Prepare yourself by starting voluntary fasting in the month of Shaaban. Hopefully it will make it easier for us to implement it in the upcoming month of Ramadan. May the worship of fasting be a shield for us from the hell fire. 

5. The second door of goodness is charity.  Charity dissolves sins like water extinguishes fire. We are encouraged to give charity especially to those in need, such as donations to those affected by floods, earthquakes and others. 

6. Take the opportunity to contribute and donate. May our contribution become a melting pot of sin and avoid us from hell fire.  The words of the Prophet SAW: 

اِتَّقُوا النَّارَ وَلَوبِشِقِّ تَمْرَةٍ 

Avoid hell even with a slice of date.

7. The third good door is to live the night with Qiamullail. Among them is by performing the night prayer, increasing the remembrance and supplication to Allah. May this practice be able to build our spiritual strength. 

Let us carry out the deeds that are among the gates of goodness, which are increasing voluntary fasting, charity and qiamullail.
