Devotion To Parents

عَنْ أَبِي أُسَيْدٍ مَالِكِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ السَّاعِدِيِّ قَالَ: بَيْنَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذْ جَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي سَلَمَةَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ: هَلْ بَقِيَ مِنْ بِرِّ أَبَوَيَّ شَيْءٌ أَبَرُّهُمَا بِهِ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهِمَا قَالَ: نَعَمْ, الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْهِمَا وَالِاسْتِغْفَارُ لَهُمَا وَإِنْفَاذُ عَهْدِهِمَا مِنْ بَعْدِهِمَا وَصِلَةُ الرَّحِمِ الَّتِي لَا تُوصَلُ إِلَّا بِهِمَا وَإِكْرَامُ صَدِيقِهِمَا 

From Abu Usaid Malik bin Rabi'ah As-Sa'idi RA said: "While we were with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, suddenly a man from Bani Salamah came to him. The man asked: "O Messenger of Allah, is there still room  for me to do good to my parents after they died?" He replied: "Yes, praying and asking for forgiveness for both of them, carrying out his will, continuing their relationship and honoring their friends."

(HR Abu Daud No. 5142)

Status: Sahih Hadith 

Learnings:

1. A child is obliged to obey and be devoted to both his parents either during life or when both have died. 

2. Among the charitable practices that can be done by a child to both of his deceased parents are:

a.  Pray for blessings

b.  Ask for forgiveness for both sins

c.  Carry out his will

d.  Connecting with family and relatives

e.  Honoring their friends 

3. Let us appreciate the role of a child to a parent. Without them who are we and can we be in the situation and position we have today?.  Realize that without their pleasure, we will not get the pleasure of Allah SWT.  Hopefully we will belong to the group that He is pleased with. 

اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْلِيْ ذُنُوْبِيْ وَلِوَالِدِيَّ وَارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِيْ صِغِيْرًا 

"O Allah!  forgive my sins and the sins of my parents and love them as they loved me from childhood."
