Showing Mercy To Our Family

Summary:

1) Allah (s.w.t.) said in Surah Ar-Rum, verse 21:

Which means: “And among His signs is that He created for you from yourselves wives, so that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection (love) and mercy. Indeed, in those are signs for those who reflect.”
-> two core family values mentioned in the verse, i.e., *love and mercy*

2) Allah (s.w.t.) said in the Qur’an:

Which means: “O Prophet! Say to your wives: ‘If you desire the life of this world and its luxury, then come, and I will give you a suitable compensation for divorce, and I will let you go graciously.’”
[Al-Ahzab: 28]

3) Sayyidah Aisyah (r.a.) said:

Which means: "I have never seen anyone who showed more mercy to his family than Rasulullah (s.a.w.)".
[Hadith narrated by Ibn Hibban]

4) Disagreements and conflicts that occur between spouses are a normal part of family life. However, in trying to solve such conflicts, one must not resort to violence of any form - let us be guided by *religious guidance derived from both the Qur’an and the Sunnah*, and not be driven by our own personal interests and desires.
Let us take the Prophet (s.a.w.) as our role model in our interactions with our families. Remember that our families have been entrusted to us from Allah (s.w.t.), and that every individual will be questioned about this trust in the Hereafter.

5,) May Allah (s.w.t.) protect us and our families from all forms of evil. And may we all be able to gather with our families in the Hereafter, and achieve eternal success in His Heaven. آمين

Recitation of Surah Al-Kahfi - Nur Between 2 Fridays

Abū Sa'id reported the Prophet as saying, “If anyone recites sūra al-Kahf (Qur’ān, 18) on Friday, light will shine brightly for him till the next Friday.”
Baihaqī transmitted it in [Kitāb] al-Da‘awāt al-kabir.

Hisn Al-Muslim 101: Before Sleeping - Al-Baqarah Last 2 Ayats (Part 3 of 13)

The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. Each one believes in Allah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. They say: "We make no distinction between any of His Messengers," and they say: "We hear, and we obey. (We seek) Your Forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return."

Allah burdens not a person beyond what he can bear. He gets rewarded for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error. Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us. Our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have the strength to bear. Pardon us and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our Protector, and help us against the disbelieving people.

He knows what happens to them in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter. And they will never encompass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. Dzulhijjah: Period of Eating Sacrificial Meat

Narrated `Abis:

I asked `Aisha "Did the Prophet (ﷺ) forbid eating the meat of sacrifices offered on `Id-ul-Adha for more than ¹three days" She said, "The Prophet (ﷺ) did not do this except in the year when the people were hungry, so he wanted the rich to feed the poor. But later we used to store even a trotter of a sheep to eat it fifteen days later."
She was asked, "What compelled you to do so?" She smiled and said, "The family of Muhammad did not eat to their satisfaction white bread with meat soup for three successive days till he met Allah."
Sahih al-Bukhari 5423
https://sunnah.com/bukhari:5423
¹three days = meaning 3 days of Tashriq

Having Empathy: Taking Care of Foster Children

Summary:

1) In a narration by Imam Muslim, there was an instance when Abu Dzar (r.a.) was about to cook. At that point, our Prophet (s.a.w.) advised Abu Dzar (r.a.) that he should add more water to the broth, so that it can then be given to the neighbours as well.

2) If we observe the life of our Prophet (s.a.w.), we will notice how he would always try to make life easier for those in need. Not only is he a great teacher, he is also an excellent exemplar for us to learn from and to emulate, eg.when the prophet (s.a.w) took care of Ali bin Abi Talib when the latter's father, Abu Talib was facing financial difficulties

3) Allah (s.w.t.) says in Surah al-Hajj, verse 77:

Which means: “O believers! Bow down, prostrate yourselves (in prayer), worship your Lord (as the one and only God), and do what is good so that you may be successful (in this world and the Hereafter).”

4) For those of us whom Allah has blessed with ease and comfort in our lives, let us consider fostering children who are in need.

5) May Allah guide us to be trustworthy people who carry out our responsibilities well. And may we be of His servants who are always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need, so that we will be able to achieve success in this world and the Hereafter.
آمين

O people, *the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade fasting on these two days (i.e., the two Eids)*. On the first of them you break your fast and celebrate your festival, and on the second you eat from the meat of your sacrifices.
It was narrated that Sa'd Abu 'Ubaid, the freed slave of ‘Abdur-Rahman bin Azhar, said: I was present at Eid with 'Umar bin al Khattab... and he mentioned a similar hadeeth.

Abu Qatada reported that a person came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said:

How do you fast? The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) felt annoyed. When 'Umar (Allah be pleased with him) noticed his annoyance, he said: We are well pleased with Allah as our Lord, with Islam as our code of life, and with Muhammad as our Prophet. We seek refuge with Allah from the anger of Allah and that of His Messenger. 'Umar kept on repeating these words till his (the Prophet's) anger calmed down. Then Umar said: Messenger of Allah, what is the position of one who fasts perpetually? He (ﷺ) said: He neither fasted nor broke it, or he said: He did not fast and he did not break it. 'Umar said: What about him who fasts for two days and does not fast one day? He (ﷺ) said: Is anyone capable of doing that? He ('Umar) said: What is the position of him who fasts for a day and doesn't fast on the other day? Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: That is the fast of David (peace be upon him). He ('Umar) said: What about him who fasts one day and doesn't fast for two days. Thereupon he (the Messenger of Allah) said: I wish I were given the strength to do that. Thereafter he (ﷺ) said: *Fasting three days every month and that of Ramadan every year is a perpetual fasting*. I seek from Allah that *fasting on the day of 'Arafa may atone for the sins of the preceding and the coming years*, and I seek from Allah that *fasting on the day of Ashura may atone for the sins of the preceding year*.

Jabir reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, *“No days are better to Allah than the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah.”* A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, are they better or time spent waging jihad in the way of Allah?” The Prophet said, “They are better than time spent waging jihad in the way of Allah.

*No day is better to Allah than the day of Arafat. Allah descends to the lowest heaven and He boasts to the inhabitants of the heavens about the inhabitants of the earth, saying: Look at My servants, appearing disheveled and dusty. They came from every mountain pass hoping for My mercy. They do not see My punishment, yet they do not see that on no day are more saved from Hellfire than the day of Arafat.”*

Embracing The Content of Al-Qur’an

Summary:

1) Allah (s.w.t) said in surah Al-Fajr verse 1-2 regarding the merits and blessings of the first 10 days of Zulhijjah:

Which means: “By the dawn, and the ten nights”.

2) The Prophet (s.a.w) also once said in a hadith, which means: "There are no days during which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah (s.w.t) than these 10 days (the first 10 days of Zulhijjah). So, recite more tahlil (“La ilaha illAllah”), takbir (“Allahu akbar”), and tahmid (“Alhamdulillah”) during that time".
[Hadith narrated by Imam Ahmad].

3) Let us increase our righteous acts and good deeds, and let us all encourage our family members to do the same:

- doing more acts of charity
- zikr (remembrance of Allah)
- performing more sunnah prayers
- fast on the Day of Arafah, for which an immense reward has been promised for us, as mentioned by our Prophet (s.a.w), which means: "Fasting on the Day of Arafah expiates the sins of the past year and of the coming year." [Hadith narrated by Imam Muslim].
- read more of the Qur’an - this is because every verse and every letter that we read from the Qur’an is blessed, with a reward behind it.

4) *How is our current relationship with the Qur’an?* Do we often recite it, reflect on its content, and try to follow its commands?

Allah (s.w.t.) said in surah Sod, verse 29:

Which means: “This is a blessed Book (the Qur’an) that We have revealed to you, (O Muhammad), so that people of understanding may reflect upon its verses; and which contains lessons for those of understanding, so that they may be mindful.”

5) May Allah (s.w.t) place us among those who successfully obtain the intercession of the Qur’an in the Hereafter. And may we be among those who glorify the Qur'an, abide by its guidance and fulfil all its demands.
آمين

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Time has taken its original shape which it had when Allah created the Heavens and the Earth. *The year is of twelve months, four of which are Haram (sacred), and out of these (four) three are in succession, i.e. Dhul-Qa'da, Dhul-Hijja and Al-Muharram, and the fourth is Rajab which is named after the Mudar tribe*, between (the month of) Jumadia (Jumadilakhir) and Sha'ban."

Then the Prophet (ﷺ) asked, "Which is this month?" We said, "Allah and His Apostle know better." On that the Prophet (ﷺ) kept quiet so long that we thought that he might name it with another name. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Isn't it the *month of Dhul-Hijja*?" We replied, "Yes." Then he said, "Which city is this?" "We replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." On that he kept quiet so long that we thought that he might name it with another name. Then he said, "Isn't it the *city of Mecca*?" We replied, "Yes, " Then he said, "Which day is today?" We replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better."

He kept quiet so long that we thought that he might name it with another name. Then he said, "Isn't it the *day of An- Nahr (i.e. sacrifice)*?" We replied, "Yes." He said, *"So your blood, your properties, (The sub-narrator Muhammad said, 'I think the Prophet (ﷺ) also said: And your honour..) are sacred to one another like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this city of yours, in this month of yours*;
And *surely, you will meet your Lord, and He will ask you about your deeds*.

Beware! *Do not become infidels after me, cutting the throats of one another*.

It is incumbent on *those who are present to convey this message (of mine) to those who are absent*. May be that some of those to whom it will be conveyed will understand it better than those who have actually heard it." (The sub-narrator, Muhammad, on remembering that narration, used to say, "Muhammad spoke the truth!") He (i.e. Prophet) then added twice, "No doubt! Haven't I conveyed (Allah's Message) to you?"

Qurban - Discouraged To Cut Hair And Trim Nails For Those Performing Ibadah Qurban When 1 Dzulhijjah Arrives

Umm Salama reported (these words) directly from Allah's Messenger (ﷺ):

If anyone has in his possession a sacrificial animal to offer as a sacrifice (on 'Id al-Adha), he should not get his hair cut and nails trimmed after he has entered the first days of Dhul Hijjah

Dzulhijjah: No Deed More Pure In The Sight of Allah Nor Greater In Reward, Than The Deeds In The 10 days of Al-Adha (Dzulhijjah)

On the authority of Ibn Abbas, on the authority of the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, who said: “There is no deed more pure in the sight of God, nor greater in reward, than his deeds in the 10 days of Al-Adha (Dzulhijjah).”  It was said: Not even jihad for the sake of God?  He said: “Not even jihad in the way of God, unless a man goes out with himself and his money and does not return from that with anything.” He said: When the 10 days came, Saeed bin Jubair used to work hard until he was almost able to do it.

Strengthening The Family Institution In Islam

Summary:

1) Allah (s.w.t.) mentions in the Quran:

Which means: “And one of His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves (O men), so that you may find peace in them. And He has placed between you (spouses) compassion and mercy. Surely in this are signs for people who reflect.”
(Ar-Rum: 21)

2) The decree of Allah (s.w.t.) in Surah An-Najm, verse 45:

Which means: “And verily, He created the pairs — males and females.”

3) How do we strengthen our family institution according to our religious values and teachings?
(a) Continue equipping our children with a holistic and comprehensive religious education.
(b) We need to deal with these differences and developments  with maturity, wisdom and mercy.

4) We should follow Allah (s.w.t.)’s guidance  to Prophet Musa and Prophet Harun (a.s.).

Which means: “Speak to him (that is to Fir’aun) with gentle words, so he may be mindful or fearful.”
(Taha: 44)

5) May Allah (s.w.t) grant us strength, guidance, and success in our efforts to educate our children with wisdom and maturity to overcome the challenges we face today. آمين

Hajj: Umrah Expiate Sins & Rewards For Hajj Mabrur Is Heaven

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "(The performance of) `Umra is an expiation for the sins committed (between it and the previous one). And the reward of Hajj Mabrur (the one accepted by Allah) is nothing except Paradise."

Hajj: Hajj Is Obligatory For Muslims

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) addressed us and said: O people, *Allah has made Hajj obligatory for you; so perform Hajj.* Thereupon a person said: Messenger of Allah, (is it to be performed) every year? He (the Holy Prophet) kept quiet, and he repeated (these words) thrice, whereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: If I were to say" Yes," it would become obligatory (for you to perform it every year) and you would not be able to do it. Then he said: Leave me with what I have left to you, for those who were before you were desroyed because of excessive questioning, and their opposition to their apostles. *So when I command you to do anything, do it as much as it lies in your power and when I forbid you to do anything, then abandon it.*

*O Allah, You are our Companion on the road and the One in Whose care we leave our family.*
*O Allah, I seek refuge in You from this journey's hardships, and from the wicked sights in store and from finding our family and property in misfortune upon returning.*

Upon returning, recite the same again adding: *'We return repentant to our Lord, worshipping our Lord, and praising our Lord'.*

A Father’s Role: Encouraging Goodness Is The Key To Happiness

Summary:

1) True happiness within a family is achieved when it is built upon the foundation of piety. That is the recipe for a family's success. This was the example demonstrated by Prophet Ismail (a.s.), as narrated in the Qur’an.
Allah (s.w.t.) said in surah Maryam verse 55:

Which means: “And he (Prophet Ismail) used to enjoin on his family and his people the prayers and the paying of alms, and his Lord was pleased with him!”

2) Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) would divide his daily time into three parts. The first part was time for Allah (s.w.t.), which he spent by performing various acts of worship. Secondly, time for the family. And the third part, was time for himself.
This was reflected in a hadith whereby Sayyidah 'Aishah (r.a.) was asked about what the Prophet (s.a.w.) used to do when he was at home. Sayyidah 'Aisyah replied, "He used to keep himself busy serving his family, and when it was time for the prayer, he would go out to perform it."
(Hadith of Imam Ahmad)

3) Husbands and wives should aim to spend quality time together. Know that family matters are a shared responsibility between husband and wife. This is our investment in strengthening our family institution.

4) As a father to our children and also a husband to our wives, we have to fully commit to guiding them to the path of goodness. This is because we do not want our family to be happy only in this world, but we also want them to attain eternal happiness in the Hereafter.

5) May Allah (s.w.t.) grant us the strength and resolve to continue fulfilling our responsibilities to our families.
May Allah (s.w.t.) continue to protect us and our families, and may He grant us happiness in this world and in the Hereafter as well.
آمين

Qurban - Difference Between Qurban, Aqīqah & Hadyu

Qurban, Aqīqah and Hadyu are terms that entail sacrificial rituals. They can be distinguished in terms of aḥkām (rulings) and definitions.

Qurban:

Qurban is the sacrificial ritual on the *specific days of Zulhijjah (from the 10th to 13th)*. It is *Sunnah Muakkadah* (highly recommended)

Aqiqah:

Aqīqah is the sacrifice made *to celebrate the birth of a child*. It is not specific to the mentioned days of Zulhijjah as per the act of Qurban. In fact, it can be *performed in any other days of the year*. The *best day to perform ‘Aqīqah, however, is on the seventh day after birth*. The Prophet s.a.w. said:

Narrated Samurah:

That the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "The boy is mortgaged by his *'Aqiqah; slaughtering should be done for him on the seventh day, he should be given a name, and his head should be shaved.*"

But if it is not possible for parents to do it on the seventh day, it can still be done in any other time *before the child reaches the age of puberty*. It is *sunnah to sacrifice 2 goats for a Baby Boy and 1 goat for a Baby Girl.*

Hadyu:

Hadyu is the one *performed on Yawm An-Naḥr (literally, day of sacrifice i.e. Aidiladha)* by the *Pilgrims in particular*. Hadyu is generally *Wājib (obligatory) upon *Pilgrims who may have met certain conditions during Hajj or Umrah, or did not perform any of the Manasik (integral rituals of Hajj)* such as not making the intention at Mīqāt (a boundary where each pilgrim makes their intention to perform the Hajj or Umrah).

Qurban - Etiquettes of Qurban (2) Slaughter In A Good Way & Sharpen Your Knife

Shaddid b. Aus said:

Two are the things which I remember Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) having said: Verily Allah has enjoined goodness to everything; so when you kill, kill in a good way and *when you slaughter, slaughter in a good way. So every one of you should sharpen his knife, and let the slaughtered animal die comfortably.*

Qurban - Criteria For Sacrificial Animals

Jabir reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

Sacrifice only a grown-up animal, unless it is difficult for you, in which case sacrifice a ram (of even less than a year, but more than six months' age).
Sahih Muslim 1963
https://sunnah.com/muslim:1963

Qurban - Bahīmat al-An‘ām (Sacrificial Animals Used In Qurban)

And for all religion We have appointed a rite [of sacrifice] that they may mention the name of Allah over what He has provided for them of *[sacrificial] animals*. For your god is one God, so to Him submit. And, [O Muhammad], give good tidings to the humble [before their Lord]
Surah Al-Ḥajj: 34

- Camels
- Cows (buffalos/bulls)
- Sheep
- Goats
- Lambs

Qurban - Deeds Loved By Allah

Narrated 'Aishah:

That the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "A human does no action from the actions on the day of Nahr (sacrifice) more beloved to Allah then spilling blood (of sacrificial animals).
On the Day of Judgement, it will appear with its horns, and hair, and hooves, and indeed the blood will be accepted by Allah from where it is received before it even falls upon earth, so let your heart delight in it."
On the authority of Imran bin Husayn and Zaid bin Arqam. Abu Eisa said: This is a ¹Hasan Gharib hadith, we do not know of it from the hadith of Hisham bin Urwah except through this route.
Darussalam grade it as Da'if - [There are 2 opinions about practising a Dhaif hadith if it's status is not too weak - one of them is that it is allowed for fadhail 'amal (priority of deeds/motivations etc) but it cannot be used as a proof/reasoning and we cannot say that it came from the Prophet SAW]
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1493
https://sunnah.com/tirmidhi:1493

¹ = If a hadith is classified as Hasan Gharib, it means that the conditions of the Hasan hadith apply to it, yet some of the narrators individually narrated something different pertaining to its matan (text) or chain of narrations.

Navigating A World of Influential Trends

Summary:

1) Allah (s.w.t.) said in the Qur’an:

Which means: "O you who believe! Protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel consists of people and stones; which is guarded and maintained by angels in His service, angels who are harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them, and they do all that they are commanded to."
[Surah At-Tahrim: 66:6]

2) Prophet (s.a.w.) said in a narration:

Which means: "Seeking knowledge is an obligation on every Muslim."
[Hadith narrated by Ibn Majah]

3) Imam Al-Ghazali stated in his book Ihya' Ulumiddin that every person has the responsibility to acquire religious knowledge, but the nature and extent of this duty may differ based on their circumstances and situation.

4) it is the responsibility of parents to try their best to understand the challenges faced by their children, while imparting the right kind of understanding, or equipping them with the necessary religious knowledge.

5) Our Prophet’s family life serves as an important example for us to learn from. This includes learning from how our Prophet (s.aw.) effectively fulfilled his various roles, as a prophet and a community leader, as well as his responsibilities as a husband, a father, and a grandfather.

6) Parents must strive to be positive role models for their children, by becoming good examples for them to know how they should lead their lives.

7) May Allah (s.w.t.) grant us the wisdom and strength to educate our children and protect them from the Hellfire. آمين

Qurban - About Prophet Ibrahim a.s. & Prophet Ismail a.s. Mentioned In Al-Quran

Allah s.w.t. said:

And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, "O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think."  He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded.  You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast."
[Surah Aṣ-Ṣāffāt: 37:102]
https://quran.com/37/102

Allah s.w.t. said:

And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead.
We called to him, "O Abraham.
You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
Indeed, this was the clear trial.
And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice.
And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations.
"Peace upon Abraham."
Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

One Sacrifice Worship (Qurban) Per Household Every Year

Narrated Mikhnaf ibn Sulaym:

We were staying with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) at Arafat; he said: O people, every family must offer a *sacrifice* and an atirah *every year*. Do you know what the ateerah is? It is what you call the Rajab sacrifice.
Abu Dawud said: 'Ateerah has been abrogated, and this tradition is an abrogated one (abolished).
Sunan Abi Dawud 2788
Status: Hadith Hasan
https://sunnah.com/abudawud:2788
Other references:

Learnings:

1. We have entered the month of Zulkaedah. We have about a month left before the coming of Eidul Adha where one of the practices required of Muslims is the worship of sacrifices.

2. Based on the hadith above, some scholars believe that sacrificial worship is a kifayah sunnah for every house (a sunnah that is highly demanded).
In the Mazhab Syafie, this sacrificial worship is the *Sunnah Muakkad*.
For Imam Abu Hanifah and scholars of the Hanafi school have established that slaughtering a sacrifice is Obligatory once a year for people who are muqim and are able to afford it.

3. This sacrificial worship is part of the religious ritual to commemorate the sacrifice of the Prophet of Allah Ibrahim and Ishmael. Carrying out this act of worship will raise the awareness to always spend wealth and make sacrifices solely to elevate the religion of Allah.

4. Come on those who have not yet reserved a portion for the sacrifice, there is still a chance to participate. *If we miss the opportunity to sacrifice this year, we are not sure if we would be able to do it again next year*.

Demands of Sacrificial Worship (Qurban) For Those Who Can

From Abi Hurairah RA, the Prophet SAW said: Whoever has the money to spend but does not make a sacrifice, then he should not approach our mosque.
Sunan Ibn Majah 3123
Status: Hasan
https://sunnah.com/ibnmajah:3123

Learnings:

1. Sacrificial worship as a sign of gratitude for all the blessings we have received.

2. People who are able but do not perform the sacrificial worship as if they do not deserve to come to the mosque to perform the prayer.

3. Try to perform the ritual of sacrifice so that it becomes an eraser for our sins and gives relief especially to the poor and the joy of our neighbors.

Hadith 42: The Infinite Extent of Forgiveness of Allah, The Exalted

On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:

I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say, “Allah the Almighty has said:

*‘O Son of Adam, as long as you invoke Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind.*
*O Son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and you then asked forgiveness from Me, I would forgive you.*
*O Son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the Earth, and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as it [too]*.’ ”
It was related by at-Tirmidhi, who said that it was a Hasan hadeeth.

On the authority of Abu Muhammad Abdullah bin ’Amr bin al-’Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “None of you [truly] believes until his desires are subservient to that which I have brought.” [Imam an-Nawawi says:] We have related it in Kitab al-Hujjah with a saheeh chain of narrators.

Hadith 40: Live In This World Like A Traveller, Do Not Wait To Do Good Deeds & Take Advantage While We Are Healthy And Alive

On the authority of Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took me by the shoulder and said, “ *¹Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a wayfarer.*”
And Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say, “ *²In the evening do not expect [to live until] the morning, and in the morning do not expect [to live until] the evening*.
*³Take [advantage of] your health before times of sickness, and [take advantage of] your life before your death.*”
[Al-Bukhari]

https://sunnah.com/nawawi 40:40

*¹ the traveller or wayfearer - he does not take this land as a residence or abode/home since he is traveller*

*² a person should utilise the opportunity to do religious deeds so that he does not waste and neglect it without realising it. How many people live through the Evening and yet do not live to see the Morning, likewise how many people live through the Morning and yet do not live to the Evening*

*³ Strive in your health before your illness as it is easier for a healthy person to do actions, on the contrary to a sickly person. Utilise your life so long as you are living because once a person dies, all his actions are cut off except 3, as mentioned in an authentic hadith from Rasulullah (ﷺ)*:

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
*When a man dies, his acts come to an end, but three, recurring charity, or knowledge (by which people) benefit, or a pious son, who prays for him (for the deceased)*.

Acceptance – The Key To Navigating Times of Hardship And of Ease

Summary:

1) A survey of studies published by psychologists, in 2018, show that there is an association between depression and financial strain. Let us observe what Allah (s.w.t.) said in surah At-Taghabun, verse 11:

Which means: “No calamity befalls anyone except by Allah’s Will. And whoever has faith in Allah, He will rightly guide their hearts through adversity. And remember, Allah has perfect knowledge of all things.”

2) Let us look at a hadith of the Prophet (s.a.w.), which says:

"Surely, there is a great reward for a great trial. And verily, if Allah (s.w.t.) loves a people, then He will inflict trials on them. Those who accept, then they will gain Allah's pleasure. Whoever does not like being put to the test, then Allah’s anger is upon them."
(Hadith narrated by Imam Ibn Majah).

3) The Prophet (s.a.w.) said in a hadith:

Which means: "A person who fights in Allah’s cause is a person who fights against his desires."
(Hadith narrated by Imam Al-Tirmizi).

4) Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said about the characteristics and nature of a believer, which was that a believer whose soul has been shaped and guided by his religious beliefs is a wise person, so much so that the Prophet (s.a.w.) said that such a person would not make the same mistake a second time. This is because he would have learnt the wisdom behind every incident and test.

5) May Allah (s.w.t.) grant us the courage and strength to face the tests of life calmly, and in a manner that would strengthen our faith. آمين

Hadith 39: Pardoning Mistakes, Forgetfulness & What Is Done Under Duress

On the authority of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
Verily Allah has pardoned [or been lenient with] for me my ummah: their mistakes, their forgetfulness, and that which they have been forced to do under duress.

Hadith 38: Worship For The Sake of Allah Is A Means of Attaining Nearness To Him & His Love

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Verily Allah ta’ala has said: ‘Whosoever shows enmity to a wali (friend) of Mine, then I have declared war against him.
And My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more loved to Me than the religious duties I have obligated upon him.
And My servant continues to draw near to me with nawafil (voluntary deeds) deeds until I Love him. When I Love him, I am *¹* his hearing with which he hears, and his sight with which he sees, and his hand with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask [something] of Me, I would surely give it to him; and were he to seek refuge with Me, I would surely grant him refuge.’ ”
[Hadith Qudsi - Al-Bukhari]

https://sunnah.com/nawawi 40:38

¹ the meaning is not that Allah will become a person's hearing but rather Allah directs what he hears so that he only hear what is good for him, similarly for sight, hand and leg in this hadith*

Hadith 37: The Excellence & Mercy of Allah, The Exalted

On the authority of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), from what he has related from his Lord:

Verily Allah ta’ala has written down the good deeds and the evil deeds, and then explained it [by saying]: “Whosoever intended to perform a good deed, but did not do it, then Allah writes it down with Himself as a complete good deed.
And if he intended to perform it and then did perform it, then Allah writes it down with Himself as from 10 good deeds up to 700 times, up to many times multiplied.
And if he intended to perform an evil deed, but did not do it, then Allah writes it down with Himself as a complete good deed.
And if he intended it [i.e., the evil deed] and then performed it, then Allah writes it down as 1 evil deed.”
[Al-Bukhari] [Muslim].

Hadith 36: The Virtues of Good Deeds To Fellow Brothers, Seeking Knowledge & Learning The Quran

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

*Whoever removes a worldly grief from a believer, Allah will remove from him one of the griefs of the Day of Resurrection.*
*And whoever alleviates the need of a needy person, Allah will alleviate his needs in this world and the Hereafter.*
*Whoever shields [or hides the misdeeds of] a Muslim, Allah will shield him in this world and the Hereafter.*
*And Allah will aid His slave so long as he aids his brother.*
*And whoever follows a path to seek knowledge therein, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise.*
*No people gather together in one of the Houses of Allah, reciting the Book of Allah and studying it among themselves, except that sakeenah (tranquility) descends upon them, and mercy envelops them, and the angels surround them, and Allah mentions them amongst those who are with Him.*
*¹And whoever is slowed down by his actions, will not be hastened forward by his lineage.*
Related by [Muslim] in these words.

https://sunnah.com/nawawi 40:36

¹ whoever slows down because of his evil action, his lineage would not enrich him, nor will it raise him, nor will it spring him forward. Lineage is an ascription to a tribe and the like

Hadith 35: The Brotherhood of Islam

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Do not envy one another, and do not inflate prices for one another, and do not hate one another, and do not turn away from one another, and do not undercut one another in trade, but [rather] be slaves of Allah and brothers [amongst yourselves].
A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim: he does not oppress him, nor does he fail him, nor does he lie to him, nor does he hold him in contempt.
Taqwa (piety) is right here [and he pointed to his chest three times]. It is evil enough for a man to hold his brother Muslim in contempt. The whole of a Muslim is inviolable for another Muslim: his blood, his property, and his honour.”

Hadith 34: Forbidding Evil Is From Imaan

On the authority of Abu Sa`eed al-Khudree (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say, “Whosoever of you *sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then [let him change it] with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart — and that is the weakest of faith.*”

Hadith 33: The Burden of Proof Is Upon The Claimant & The Oath Is Incumbent Upon The One Who Denies

On the authority of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
Were people to be given everything that they claimed, men would [unjustly] claim the wealth and lives of [other] people. But, the onus of proof is upon the claimant, and the taking of an oath is upon him who denies.

Appreciating The Divine Gift of Time

Summary:

1) Allah (s.w.t.) said in the Qur’an:

Which means: *“By the passage of time!* *Surely humanity is in grave loss*, except for those who have faith, who do good, who urge each other to the truth, and who encourage each other to be steadfast.”
[Al-‘Asr: 1-3]

2) As the saying goes, *time and tide wait for no man*. If we are not careful, time will slip through our fingers, and be lost to us forever. We can never get that time back, and neither can we go back in time.
As believers, we should take full advantage of the time that has been granted to us. Let us not waste that time with useless pursuits, because tomorrow is not guaranteed to us.

3) Let us reflect on Prophet Muhammad’s (s.a.w.) message, and think about how we can embody it in our daily lives.

Which means: "There are two blessings that many people waste: good health and free time."
[Hadith narrated by Ibn Majah]

4) Story of *Imam An-Nawawi's life journey
In a day, which has only 24 hours, Imam An-Nawawi was able to attend to 12 different gatherings of knowledge and he was able to produce various religious books that are still used by the Islamic community to this day. May Allah (s.w.t.) reward him immensely

5) Du'a: May we become people who not only make good use of our time, but who also bring benefit to those around us...ameen

Hadith 32: Do Not Harm & Do Not Be A Cause of Harm

On the authority of Abu Sa’eed al-Khudree (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
*There should be neither harming (darar - meaning unintentional) nor reciprocating harm (dirar - meaning with intention of causing harm to the one who harms us)*.
A Hasan hadeeth related by Ibn Majah, ad-Daraqutnee and others as a musnad hadeeth. It was also related by Malik in al-Muwatta in *¹mursal* form from Amr bin Yahya, from his father from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), but leaving Abu Sa’eed from the chain. And it has other chains of narrations that strengthen one another.

https://sunnah.com/nawawi 40:32

¹Hadith Mursal happens when a chain of narrators in which the final link at the end of the chain (which is the sahabat/companion of the Prophet ﷺ ) is missing - which means the chain from Tabiin goes straight to Rasulullah ﷺ hence bypassing the sahabat

Hadith 31: An Act That invites Allah's And People's Love

On the authority of Abu al-’Abbas Sahl bin Sa’ad as-Sa’idee (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:

A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah, direct me to an act which, if I do it, [will cause] Allah to love me and the people to love me.” So he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Renounce the world and Allah will love you, and renounce what the people possess and the people will love you.”

On the authority of Abu Tha’labah al-Kushanee — Jurthoom bin Nashir (may Allah be pleased with him) — that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

Verily Allah ta’ala has laid down religious obligations (fara’id), so do not neglect them; and He has set limits, so do not overstep them; and He has forbidden some things, so do not violate them; and He has remained silent about some things, out of compassion for you, not forgetfulness — so do not seek after them.
